Georgetown Waterfront Park
On June 19, 2006, the National Park Service began work on the new Georgetown Waterfront Park, the 10 acre green space along the
Potomac waterfront between the Washington Harbour complex to Key Bridge.
The Georgetown Waterfront Park will be transformed into a more appealing recreational space for walking, picnicking, bicycling
and skating.
The plans to develop the park will include the following features:
a promenade with three overlooks with views of the Potomac River, a separate bike trail linking the Capital Crescent Trail with the Rock Creek
Trail, shade and flowering trees, a fountain plaza, park benches, walking paths, and lighting, an arbor and river stairs that form an
amphitheatre for viewing boat races or other activities.
When completed, the Georgetown Waterfront Park will join 225 miles of public parkland along the Potomac River, stretching from Mount Vernon,
Virginia to Cumberland, Maryland.
A public-private partnership with the National Park Service, the National Park Foundation and businesses, developers,
individuals and organizations, has raised over $12 million of the $18 million needed to complete the Georgetown Waterfront Park.
The first section of the park is expected to be completed by spring 2008.
